You’ve surely heard that famous Halloween greeting "Trick or treat!" But how did this expression come to be? 🎃 The very idea of going from house to house in search of food dates back to the Middle Ages. In Britain and Ireland, the poor - often accompanied by their children - visited homes offering prayers for the souls of the departed in exchange for special "soul cakes." The expression as we know it today originated in North America. The first printed references to the phrase "trick or treat" appeared in Canada and the United States around the turn of the 1920s and 1930s. A century ago, Halloween pranks pulled by teenagers could be quite harsh: kids might smear windows with tar, steal garden gates, or overturn carts. To protect their property, adults began essentially "buying off" the youngsters with candies and homemade baked goods. The custom became firmly established in the 1950s, when the phrase appeared on screen - most notably in the classic 1952 Disney cartoon titled "Trick or Treat." Today, it’s all just a bit of fun, but keep in mind: originally, it was a very real threat! 😉 #Englishasweknowit
